This flag is a Tricolor, so I will say nothing bad about it. The story is really great too. Here is a quote from Wikipedia: “According to legend, the flag was invented by Duke Leopold V of Austria as a consequence of his fighting during the Siege of Acre. After a fierce battle, his white surcoat was completely drenched in blood. When he removed his belt, the cloth beneath remained unstained, revealing the combination of red-white-red. So taken was he by this singular sight that he adopted the colours and scheme as his banner. The incident was documented as early as 1260.” Great symbolism, great story.
My Redesign:
This is essentially a simplified version of the State Flag of Austria. The eagle represents Austrian Sovereignty.
Hi! I’m going to be starting a new project: I will redesign one EU Member State flag every day for 27 days. Each flag will be significantly different than the original. I’m doing the flags in alphabetical order, starting today with Austria.
Ugh. There are many problems with this flag, but at least it has symbolism. The Commonwealth Star, under the Union Jack, is a symbol of Australia, and the Southern Cross represents the Southern Hemisphere.
My Redesign
I kept the Commonwealth Star, and used the national colors of Australia, green and Gold. I am going to try to use a Canadian Pale for all my redesigns of the flags of Commonwealth Nations, to have a sense of similarity between them.
Fiji
Current Flag:
This flag hurts my eyes. The Lion and the Cross represent the U.K., which colonized Fiji, and the bananas, cacao bean, sugarcanes, and palm trees represent Fiji’s natural resources. The dove represents peace.
My Redesign:
I used all 3 national colors of Fiji, and a Canadian Pale. The cacao bean still represents resources.
New Zealand
Current Flag:
This Flag is too similar to that of Australia, and the symbolism is almost the same, excepting the Commonwealth Star, which does not appear in this flag.
My Redesign:
I used 2 of New Zealand’s National colors, red and blue, with a Canadian Pale. The charge is the Southern Cross, giving this flag the exact same symbolism as the original.
Tuvalu
Current Flag:
This is actually an okay flag. The stars are arranged like the islands of Tuvalu, and they represent their respective islands. I will use the same symbolism in my redesign.
My Redesign:
This flag is based off of the 1996-97 Flag of Tuvalu. It is essentially that flag, but with the National Seal removed. It was such a good core design, I broke from the Canadian Pale design.
I haven’t posted for a while, because I haven’t been doing much, but I wanted to share the recipe for this cake I made yesterday.
This is actually a quite easy cake to make. I used an NYT Cooking recipe for the cake. You can find it here. The lemon glaze is very easy to make. Here is the recipe:
Take about 2/3 – 1 cup of confectioner’s sugar in a small bowl, and mix in the juice of 2/3 – 1 lemon. Add more sugar to make the glaze harder, and more lemon to make it softer.
It took me about 1 hour and 10 minutes to make this cake, and it is very stress-relieving.
Hi! I am posting this to say that I have finished with the 50 Days, 50 States project. It has been a really amazing routine for me. I have heard some people asking me what I will do after this project. I am thinking of doing more writing about politics and cooking. I will also do another vexillological post, in which I redesign every flag that uses the Union Jack.
This is actually a pretty good flag, except for the seal. The red, white and blue are the colors of the U.S. Flag, and the white also represents justice and peace.
My Redesign:
My flag basically has the same symbolism, but I removed the seal and I used the proposed state colors for Wyoming.
This is, in my opinion, one of the worst state flags. The symbols on the seal represent industry.
My Redesign:
I used the pickaxe and shovel from the coat of arms, and the colors from it. It is the same symbolism as the original flag, but I added some more: the 30 stars represent Wisconsin as the 30th state to join the Union.
Very long, and ugly, but good symbolism! The white represents purity, and the blue represents the Union. The corn represents agriculture, and the hammer represents industry.
My Redesign:
I kept the border, and I added this hammer. It still represents purity, industry, and the Union.
S.O.B. Has been referred to as “a giant dollar bill someone ran up a flagpole.” I think I should include the Washington family Coat of Arms in my design.
My Redesign:
I used the same colors, and the Washington coat of arms. Originally, the color of the coat of arms is red, but I changed it to green to keep some elements of the old flag.
Look! Another seal on a blue field! I know this flag is boring, but at least the seal represents destroying tyrants, which I like.
My Redesign:
I used similar symbolism here. The swords in the crowns represent killing tyrants, the red represents their blood, and the cross is that of St. George, and it represents the United Kingdom, which Virginia was a part of.
